Question
Hello John,
I've read some of your replys to howard miller/barwick clocks on the subject of weights and it seems that maybe you can direct me to find affordable replacements for my mothers wall clock. It is a #451-050 movement with a 85cm pendulum.Model #612433 made in 1977 by barwick.Ive done some research and it has told me the weights are as follows. 4.7,4.7 and 6.6#. Ive consulted a few area shops and they told me prices from 200-350 dollars. It seems that it isnt worth putting that kind of an investment into an old clock and we would be interested in selling it rather than put $300 into it. Please give me your opinion on this clock.
                                             Thank you.
                                             Rick

Answer
Hi, Rick.  First, as stated in my Allexperts personal information, I do not give values of clocks.  So I cannot give you an opinion as to what to do with it.  That would be up to you.  I did check my Howard Miller Catalogs and they do not go back far enough to list the 612-433.  I will be visiting Howard Miller next week and will see if I can find any information on it.  However, the 451 movement was manufactured by Hermle and you are correct on the weights.  One of the problems with ordering weights for a clock is that you have to order the weight shell assemblies and then choose and order a combination of lead fillers to meet the weight specs.  I can give you the names of some suppliers and I do also have the weights/fillers in stock.  As the Allexperts Website is not for selling, you can contact me at my shop email address below and I can give you the details.  Also, the finish is needed, either polished brass or satin brushed brass.

Expertise

As much as I would like to offer values of clocks, I am not a certified appraiser and will not venture into giving an unresearched guess. There is very little published information on what I consider to be the value of "modern production clocks". Considerations are what the clock originally sold for, the condition of the case and movement, and particularly the area in which you live, the demand and the economy. ALSO, WATCHES ARE NOT MY FIELD. However, I can advise the clock owner on proper maintenance of a clock to keep it running, small corrections and adjustments and how to move a clock without damaging it. I can also advise on obtaining parts for clocks. It helps if you can send any information on the clock movement which is usually found on the back plate of the movement. I have been a clockmaker for about 35 years and was plant engineer in the mid 90's and later operations and engineering consultant at Emperor Clock Company in Fairhope, Alabama. I now have my own clock shop.

Experience

One of my greatest accomplishments was traveling to China to assist a clock factory in building clocks to the standards which we required. With the proper specifications and quality control, some beautiful clock cases were built. The factory people from the wood carvers to the plant manager were very congenial, friendly and I left a lot of wonderful friends when I returned from my trips.
