Question
My grandfather has this Montgomery Ward grandfather clock he bought brand new, and in the main gears it needs a little piece that goes around a gear. I wish I could draw it on here but if you took a lil piece of metal and bent a "C" shape into it and it is not but maybe a hlf inch long. I wonder if we can purchase the gear or the part. On the main gear box itself reads ERHLANIAUCH UHRENFABRIK GERMANY,above it is a #-77 474, below it is a #- 269937,,Chain Drive,,On the back outside on the wood structure reads...Montgomery Ward 00M9090 WAL,,and it is stamped in black ink. If you could help us in any way I would really appreciate, because my grandfather loves that clock & so do I & would really like to see him get it working again. Thank you.  Corey.

Answer
Corey, sometimes the information on the back of the clock is a little  difficult to read.  Yours says, "Erhard Jauch Uhrenfabrik Germany".  It is known as the "Jauch 77" by most clockmakers.  I am not quite sure of the part to which you are referring, but is it possible for you to send me a digital photo of the part of the clock that has the broken or missing piece?  My shop email address is below.  If you can't send a photo, email me anyway and I'll send you a photo of the movement and your can identify the part.  I have many of these movements in my "boneyard", and probably have the piece you need.  Also, there were some issues with that particular movement and I can discuss them with you after we determine the part you need.  Let me know.

Expertise

As much as I would like to offer values of clocks, I am not a certified appraiser and will not venture into giving an unresearched guess. There is very little published information on what I consider to be the value of "modern production clocks". Considerations are what the clock originally sold for, the condition of the case and movement, and particularly the area in which you live, the demand and the economy. ALSO, WATCHES ARE NOT MY FIELD. However, I can advise the clock owner on proper maintenance of a clock to keep it running, small corrections and adjustments and how to move a clock without damaging it. I can also advise on obtaining parts for clocks. It helps if you can send any information on the clock movement which is usually found on the back plate of the movement. I have been a clockmaker for about 35 years and was plant engineer in the mid 90's and later operations and engineering consultant at Emperor Clock Company in Fairhope, Alabama. I now have my own clock shop.

Experience

One of my greatest accomplishments was traveling to China to assist a clock factory in building clocks to the standards which we required. With the proper specifications and quality control, some beautiful clock cases were built. The factory people from the wood carvers to the plant manager were very congenial, friendly and I left a lot of wonderful friends when I returned from my trips.
