Clocks, Watches/Stopping pendulum
Expert: William J Perkins - 8/3/2010
QuestionHello. I have a Howard Miller 612-533. I've wound all three things (chime, strike, and clock) and the pendulum simply won't keep swinging. Sometimes it only goes about 6 minutes. At one point, I got it to keep going over twelve hours, but it stopped right before it hit 12.
I read the following on the back, when dealing with a stopping pendulum:
"...remove pendulum and move crutch to right or left beyond its normal arc until the proper beat is attained."
I see the diagram and the crutch, but I'm not certain what this is describing, or even if this is my problem. Can you help? Thanks in advance.
Answer"proper beat is attained" is the condition where the tick tick is equal while the pendulum is swinging side to side.
Your clock should have an automatic beat regulator. If the problem is indeed a matter of bringing into beat, we must determine why the function is not activating itself.
I know it is a pain in the butt, but I do need more information. If you can please send me a good clear picture of your clock, both front and back with door open and back off. Most importantly send me a copy of the material from whence you obtained the instructional data. With that I could annotate the data for your better understanding, and return it to you
