Clocks, Watches/Lubrication

Question
I recently bought a Smiths Mantle Clock from a second hand shop. It is a three spring winder and the movement has stamped numbers on it that are K6A and 583. It is a bit dirty and the bearing areas look gummed up with old grease. The clock with run for about 15 minutes and then stop. the chimes work when running. My question is what is safe to use to clean the the dust and grease off and what kind of lubrication should bee used after cleaning? Should a light oil or a light grease such as white Lubriplate be used? There are a couple of openings in the mainspring housings that expose the springs. Would it be recommended to put a few drops of oil into these openings also?

Answer
My suggestion are; 1)  go to local library and have them lend you a copy of Philip E Balcomb's book "THE CLOCK REPAIR PRIMER".  This book will answer your questions about cleaning, material's etc.  2)  Order on line a clock lubricating kit.  These kits will provide the the lubrication you will require along with instructions.  Regards WJP
