how are these small rods used on clocks?

Hi Bill, I don't have quite enough information here to give you a complete answer. I guess it depends on how small they are. Steel rods can be used to replace lantern pinions and pivots. I can't think of much use for small brass rods unless they are hollow tubes. In that case they can be used to make bushings.
If you tell me more about these I will try to give you a more complete answer.
