Clocks, Watches/replacing wire cable chain

Question
have a broken middle wire cable on howard miller grandfather, need instructions on removing and replacing it

Answer
Caroline, this is not a simple fix and I don't know if a novice can pull it off. Usually the movement must be removed from the case. The center cable is the hardest one to replace. A good clock man might spend an hour or more doing this. On rare occasions a new cable can be put onto the drum successfully but there are a lot of things that can go wrong.
There are stoppers that stop the winding and unwinding process at the top and bottom. These can be very tricky and even professional clock repair persons can have a problem with them. If they are not set correctly the weights will not go all the way up or all the way down.
Having said that, if you want to try I can help you get a replacement cable.
