Question
why are there so many sprockets involved in a clocks movement

Answer
To respond to your question would require me to, literally, write a book.  I have neither the time nor inclination to do so.  I suggest you take advantage of the resources of your public library to research the why of so many sprockets in a clock.  To aid you in your research. the occurrence of successful mechanical time keepers did not occur until the invention and application of the pendulum and the escapement.  Regards WJP
