Question
I have a B&D Limited tall case clock that is missing the chime tubes. I have a machine shop and could make them if I new the proper length and thickness of the wall of the material.  Is there anywhere I can get this information. Any help you can give me would be greatly appreciated.

Answer
Richard, I do have some charts on chime tube lengths. First, the ones I have in my shop are 1-1/8" in dia. and the wall thickness is around 0.060" thick.  I am not sure how a 6 tube arrangement is configured.  I am familiar with the triple-chime 9 tube set, and the Westminster 5 tube set, which consists of the 4 Westminster notes and the 5th being the strike which is identical to the 4th low note.  I have even seen the 5th strike tube which is different from the 4th.  Can you tell me in what order the chimes and strike play on the hour?  Is it a 4 note Westminster with two as the strike?  One of my sources lists the lengths, from the longest as:  2 ea. 56-1/8", 1 ea. 48", 1 ea. 45-3/4" and 1 ea. 42-3/4".  This is for the 4 note Westminster chime with the fifth (same length as the 4th) being the strike.  I will try to do some more research while waiting for your reply.

Expertise

As much as I would like to offer values of clocks, I am not a certified appraiser and will not venture into giving an unresearched guess. There is very little published information on what I consider to be the value of "modern production clocks". Considerations are what the clock originally sold for, the condition of the case and movement, and particularly the area in which you live, the demand and the economy. ALSO, WATCHES ARE NOT MY FIELD. However, I can advise the clock owner on proper maintenance of a clock to keep it running, small corrections and adjustments and how to move a clock without damaging it. I can also advise on obtaining parts for clocks. It helps if you can send any information on the clock movement which is usually found on the back plate of the movement. I have been a clockmaker for about 35 years and was plant engineer in the mid 90's and later operations and engineering consultant at Emperor Clock Company in Fairhope, Alabama. I now have my own clock shop.

Experience

One of my greatest accomplishments was traveling to China to assist a clock factory in building clocks to the standards which we required. With the proper specifications and quality control, some beautiful clock cases were built. The factory people from the wood carvers to the plant manager were very congenial, friendly and I left a lot of wonderful friends when I returned from my trips.
