Clocks, Watches/Howard Miller - Extra Chime

Question
I have a Howard Miller Grandfather clock that is chiming one extra time for each hour.  I first thought the time was just an hour off but found that at 12:00 it actually chimes 13 times.  Then at 1:00, it will chime twice.  The clock is about ten years old.

Answer
To fix this problem you need to get at the front of the clock movement. This may be difficult for a novice because the face may need to be removed or the movement might have to come out of the case.
The strike side of the clock consists of a rack, a snail and some levers. Most likely the rack is dropping down too far and needs adjusting. There are a couple of other possibilities but the movement needs to be inspected in order to troubleshoot the problem.
Let me know if you want to attempt to fix this yourself.
