QuestionI recently oiled my colonial weight driven grandfather clock which i had to turn around to get to the back. When i restarted the clock it stops at the same time which is about 10:45. I did have to remove the face in order to oil it. I did use clock oil.
AnswerDoes your clock have a moon-dial? Did you perchance remove the weights? One of the cause possibilities is that the wrong weight is trying to drive the chine train. The heaviest weight must ALLWAYS be hung to the right. (as you face the clock) Another good probability is over lubrication. One drop is totally sufficient to lubricate the entire clock. To determine this condition examine all the lubricating points to see that no weeping has occurred. Should weeping be a factor I suggest you flush all the pivots with high grade isotopic alcohol. Allow it to dry and start over. The fact the clock always stops near the 3/4 hour position suggest the preceding routine to be appropriate. Regards WJP
