Question
QUESTION: I have a Howard Miller 510-446 Grandfather clock (first sold in 1989), serial # 03370986 I was given from my mother in law.  I have it all set up in my home by the book, but after less than 10 min. of running the clock stops.  I have no idea if it was running for her as she has dementia.  Everything appears to be fine.  Is there anything I can check for or do?

ANSWER: First of all, make sure the weights are properly hung.  Just by lifting the weights you will note one is much heavier than the others.  (this weight must always by hung on the right side, as you face the clock).  Secondly, as you let the pendulum swing back and forth does it cause an even ticking?  If not the clock is out of beat and must be adjusted to compensate.  If the beat is irregular let me know and I will try to guide you through a correcting procedure.  Do you know if the clock has been cleaned and/or adjusted within the last year or two?  If it has not have a local clock repair person take care of the matter for you.  Regards WJP

---------- FOLLOW-UP ----------

QUESTION: Thank you for your reply.  I installed the weights as they were marked on the bottoms, the lightest one being on the left as you view the clock.  The other two are marked right and center as you look at the clock.  As the pendulum swings you see the second hand tick away and hear it as well.  When the pendulum swings to the left it ticks then, as it changes directions it ticks again (both noises and movements of the second hand being on the left side of the swing).  To my knowledge the clock has never been touched for any maintenance or cleaning.  There is no dust or anything inside.  If the clock is out of beat as you mentioned I would like to try and fix that with your help.  thank you again

Answer
I urge you have this clock serviced by a qualified clock repair person.  At the very least, the clock is in dire need of fresh lubricants and a good cleaning.  These clock should be inspected by qualified clock repair persons once a year, and serviced at least one every 5 years.  Regards WJP
