Question
Our grandfather clock stopped chiming about two weeks ago.  The cylinders are not dropping simultaneously; sometimes the middle one drops first.  Any ideas as to what could be wrong and if it can be fixed?

Answer
not chiming, then the weight powering the chiming on the right and the strike at the hour on the left will not move since they are not being used.

weights hung in the wrong order is the first to check- heaviest belongs on the right next heaviest in the middle- often marked on their bottoms

the lever on the dial by the #3 might be in the off or "silent" position

last normal cause is old age (20+)

mechanism may need professional overhaul, cleaning, oiling etc. and a new replacement mechanism may be the best solution.
