Clocks, Watches/Elgin

Question
I have a small Elgin pocket watch that I believe is maybe a lady's watch. It has a C.W.C Co case and a serial number on the watch of 17461724. A case serial number of 38610 I believe. the 6 or maybe it is a 5 is a difficult read. I have been told it would take maybe $130 to repair it to running condition. I think it would then be at the high end of it's possible value but I hate to see it just waste away when it is close to be working and still useful. What can you tell me about this watch and your opinion as to repairing it. Thank you, Doug

Answer
Doug,

I am assuming that someone looked at the watch to come up with that figure so I am
going to assume again it was a qualified person.

With that in mind, the question is should one repair a watch if the value is equal, or less
than the cost of the repair.

Now, if this watch is only an investment and there is not ties to your family or no sentimental value, then you have to weigh the cost and the value.  In that case, it probably is not worth fixing.

If that is not the case, I would suggest that it might still be worth repairing.

First, this is an antique.  Elgin watch company is not making watches any longer so it has historic value.

If this is an family heirloom, then it is a part of your family's legacy and that alone would create enough value to warrant keeping it in good condition.

In running order, the watch is worth more money if you try to sell it.

kind regards,
