I have an antique Seth Thomas mantle clock. We have had issues with it for the past few months off and on with it stopping.  I thought perhaps it had been overwound.  As of today, I cannot get it to keep running more than a few minutes at a time, even though I know it is wound.  I can get the pendulum to start swinging, but it seems like occasionally the ticking will get very quiet or make an unusual sound and then it starts ticking normally again.  Eventually it stops completely.  Sometimes it will only run for about a minute; at most, five minutes. Any idea what could be wrong?

Answer
yes it is wound up as shown.

the back photo shows a bent paperclip or wire attached to the gong base and hooked into the movement. This is not factory set up and might be causing a problem?

beyond that it might need oiling or overhaul

is the ticking, "even" sounding left to right as you watch it ticking through the back door?

Comment - On a scale of 1-10, I would give Mr. Saunders a 15 on each category. His responses were clear, addressed my questions and concerns in a way that even I could understand, and even sent a picture. He explained what I had and how to resolve the issue. I was amazed at how quickly he replied to each on my e mails. He shouldn't get a gold star, he should get a whole box of them!!! Thank you Mr. Saunders, I will keep you on my e-mail "speed dial". Comment - Ken answered my question regarding how to adjust the proper striking of the hammers on my Grandfather clock within a few minutes of my sending the question to him. He answered my follow-up question the next morning. I would rate him higher if there was a number larger than ten in the selection box. Thanks again Ken Comment - I RECEIVED AN ANSWER WITHIN AN HOUR.OUTSTANDING SERVICE.YOUR RATING SHOULD BE HIGHER THAN 10.
