Clocks, Watches/Grandfather clock with stuck weight

Question
I have an Interclock grandfather clock w/three chimes. Recently, while pulling the chain to "wind" the clock (not the chimes), the chain appeared to slip. Now I cannot pull the chain. It appears that the chain pulley is designed to ratchet backwards when "winding", then catch on the attached gear to drive it. Now it (the ratchet, not the chain) is stuck. The chain is not bound or jammed but the ratchet does not seem to be releasing. How can I fix this. It seems like a simple problem. Is it?

Answer
Sounds like a defective ratchet.  If so the cure is not simple.  The chain wheel assembly would have to be removed to effect correction.  I would recommend having a qualified clock mechanic do such work.  If you wish to develop this further with me I would need more information, such as all the information stamped on your clock movements backplate.  With that data I could probably identify the precise movement involved, and thus, be able to offer you suggestions as to how to proceed.  Regards WJP
