Question
I have a 100-year-old Charles Jacques tall case clock that is totally missing the leather covers for its hammers.  I am looking for a source for the leather and also am interested in knowing what thickness it should be and what gauge wire I need to affix it to the hammers.  Thank you for your help.  Sincerely, Beverly

Answer
try a chamois from the auto parts dept or your own garage. Try one hammer and see. Or some garments or gloves from Goodwill or your own wardrobe. Fairly thin wire easy to bend - probably steel. Try a selection at  the hardware store--22 gage should be eonough. Put 6-8 turns on each hammer head.
