QuestionQUESTION: We have a Pearl grandfather clock made in 12/1984. The middle weight is the only one moving, the other two will not come down, also it will not chime. Any suggestions?
ANSWER: not sure how you know the month- but anyway-- the heavy weight goes on the right - check -----make sure the switch by the #3 is in the chime position and not "silent" (may not have switch) pull down slightly on the right weight as you move the minute hand clockwise- see if it chimes- check the hammers on the left and right of the mechanism are free to hit the chime rods- peek in back of thru side panels---23 years is about the age Hermle movements and others quit chiming due to wear- advise

QUESTION: You said the heavy weight goes on the right, are the weights different weights? The switch is not in the silent position. And the month came with the year, I assume it is the month it says 12/1984, maybe it means something else. I will check the chimes. Thanks for you answer, it was very helpful.
ANSWER: most modern movements have not equal weights. where are you "finding" the "year" ???

QUESTION: I didn't know the weights were different weights! But you said the heaviest goes on the right, does it make a difference what order the other 2 goes? The month and year and I guess the model number or whatever it is came on a little sticker that was on the clock. I bought 2 of these clocks in 1984, one for my wife and one for my mother, they are beautiful clocks, but just have been neglected, would love to get them working again. Thanks a lot.
Answerdepending on the movement they may be the same - but the rule is they go from heavy on the right to lightest on the left even if all the same! If the clocks have been sitting not running for several years they may just need cleaning and not repair- gonna need a pro either way.
