Expert: Kenneth Saunders - 5/23/2007

Question
QUESTION: While oiling my Ridgeway clock a small spring came loose and I cannot find where it came from.  It is shown as part #38 on the E&G movements parts list, but I can't determine its location.  Can you help with replacing this spring?  It is the only loose spring in the movement.

ANSWER: Bob: I do not know what is the "E&G movements parts list"? what makers' marks are on the back brass plate of the movement and what does this spring look like ?? coiled? flat?  long ? short? diameter? thanks - need more info to help.

QUESTION: The E&G movements parts list shows a schematic of all of the gears, etc. with a part numbers indicated.  The spring is a very small (1/2" long) coiled spring (1/8" dia.) and is shown as part # 38 on the movement list.  The clocks runs fine, but will not chime.

QUESTION: Thanks, Ken.  I put the spring back where it belongs.  Now the clock chimes, but it chimes 5 minutes early every quarter,half,three-quarters and hour.  Can you offer any suggestions on how to solve this early chiming problem?
Bob Walker
ANSWER: Sure! Un screw the nut holding the minute hand on and remove the minute hand- using a pair of pliers or a square shaft like on a file handle --hold the collet from turning and move the hand to reposition it and try it back on the clock.

QUESTION: Ken ,
What and where is the colleton my cloc? If I remove the minute hand and hold the collet from turning, how can I move the hand to reposition it if it is off of the clock.  I am unclear how to proceed here.
Bob Walker
ANSWER: the collet is the round center of your minute hand where it goes on the clock- has a square hole in it. OK? The collet is a seperate round piece from the rest of the long decorative hand itself. If you hold the center collet and turn the hand, the square hole will reposition relative to the hand--adjust to taste and put back on the clock. OK?

---------- FOLLOW-UP ----------

QUESTION: My clock is different.  The minute hand has a square hole that fits over a squared off shaft that protrudes out in front of the clock. The shaft is round as it extends back into the clock.  The end of that square shaft in front, has a threaded piece to accept the nut that holds the minute hand on. I cannot hold one piece and turn another. The shaft is a solid piece.  The hour hand is mounted on a collar that goes over the minute hand solid shaft and is flush with the clock face.  The clock chimes at 10 past, 25 past, 40 past 55 past the hours. Please advise.  Thanks.

Answer
Bob: you say: "My clock is different.  The minute hand has a square hole"

Your clock is NOT different- remove the minute hand, take a pair of pliers, carry both the hand and the pliers outdoors. Now hold the round center part of the hand with the square hole in it with the pliers and hold the rest of the hand in your other hand and turn the pliers to reposition the square hole. Go back inside and try the hand on the clock.
