Clocks, Watches - Tempus Fugit Grandfather Clock

Expert: William J Perkins - 5/17/2007

Question
I have a Tempus Fugit Grandfather chime clock that require you to wind the clock with a key.  The clock chime more times than it should according to the current time.  When it is 6:00, the clock will chime nine (9) times instead of six (6). Please help.  Thanks.

Answer
You can correct this condition at any striking hour.  Per your example, the clock strikes 9:00 but shows 6:00.  Stop the clock at once by arresting the pendulum.  Grasp the hour hand and turn it backwards to 6:00.  Start the movement by swinging the pendulum to one side and releasing it.  You will have accomplished the correction desired.
NOTE:  Because the hour hand is friction fit to its arbor you can move it forwards or backwards.  Should you break the friction fit, simply move the hand to it proper position, relative to the correct time, and push the hand towards the dial.  The minute hand is an entirely different matter, never move it backwards, always move it forwards and allow all strike sequences to complete before moving it further.  Please let me know how this works for you.  Regards WJP
