Question
We have a U-10 Weightdriven Westminster Grandmother Clock that is about 40 years old. For the past 20 years it was not even running, and now it keeps good time, but the chimes are erratic. The instructions call for an annual oiling. Is this something we can do ourselves, and if so what type of oil would you recommend. Do you think oiling would help the chiming issue?

Answer
Hi Zella,
There are two common causes of chime problems. One is needing lubrication, and the other is wear in the bearings of the movement. On a clock that has run 20 years, there is a possibility that the movement is worn out.
Although some clock companies include oiling instructions in their owners manuals, I have found that owners usually find this very difficult. Clocks must be oiled at every pivot point (where a shaft goes through a hole in the front or rear main plate), and numerous other places. It is also important that you do not oil certain places.  The amount of oil used in each pivot point must be very small. It is extremely important that you use ONLY clock oil. Ordinary oils will cause serious problems with your clock. Clock oil can be obtained from any clock materials house.
    Thanks for your question.   Martin
