About John Newman
Expertise
Because of the variations of clock values throughout the world, and particularly the lack of data on modern production clocks, I regret that I CANNOT DETERMINE CLOCK VALUES. ALSO, WATCHES ARE NOT MY FIELD. However, I can advise the clock owner on proper maintenance of a clock to keep it running, small corrections and adjustments and how to move a clock without damaging it. I can also advise on obtaining parts for clocks. It helps if you can send any information on the clock movement which is usually found on the back plate of the movement. I have been involved in building, repairing and restoring clocks for about 30 years and was plant engineer in the mid 90's and later operations and engineering consultant at Emperor Clock Company in Fairhope, Alabama. I now have my own clock shop.

Experience
One of my greatest accomplishments was traveling to China to assist a clock factory in building clocks to the standards which we required. With the proper specifications and quality control, some beautiful clock cases were built. The factory people from the wood carvers to the plant manager were very congenial, friendly and I left a lot of wonderful friends when I returned from my trips.

Clocks, Watches - W. Haid 351-020

Expert: John Newman - 9/26/2006

Question
Hi,

I found a W. haid regulator type schoolhouse clock in a thrift store.  I paid $10 for it and it runs AND the chimes even work.  Do you know what ever became of the W HAID company and is the clock worth anything?  It's in very good condition with a minor scratch on the case.

Answer
Jon, I could find nothing on W. Haid Clocks.  You can Google or eBay and find some examples.  The 351-020 is a Hermle movement.  You will also find a number such as a  45 over a line with another number such as 77.xx, meaning, for example, that it is an equivalent 45 cm pendulum with a 77 beat per minute pendulum.  I would have no idea what the worth would be, but it sounds like you got a deal!

I checked with my Clocksmiths Internet Group and received only one reply.  He said that he had worked on one and the movement was a Hermle.  So the company must have made a limited number of clocks.
