Question
I am trying to find a complete works for a Welby wall clock with pendulum. It has a 10" face. The works are powered by one "D" cell battery. Numbers/letters on the works are: c1401, B-6b, and b6ob. Made in Japan. Any help is appreciated. Thanks

Answer
Hi Charles,
Replacement battery movements are available from clock supply houses like Timesavers, Merritts Antiques or Empire Clock. The replacement movement will probably be different from your original in both size and features. The two main considerations are getting a movement that fits in the space available inside your clock, and getting a correct handshaft length, so that the hands are neither too close to the dial, nor sticking out so far that it looks odd or hits the front glass (if your clock has one).
Mounting the movement is usually easy. It will be held on by a single nut on the handshaft and, sometimes, some double-sided tape on the front of the movement. You may need to replace the hands, if your original hands do not fit on the handshaft, but many sizes and types of hands are also available. In my opinion, the best of the battery movements is the Hermle Quartz 2214 or 2215. This movement has pendulum, chimes, and other useful features. Its handshaft is a bit larger in diameter than some other movements, so you may need to slightly enlarge the handshaft hole in your clock.
