Clocks, Watches/chime on Colonial Brand Grandmother clock

Question
Hello,
I just inherited a Colonial Brand Grandmother clock.  It is chain driven and at least 30 years old, but in fantastic shape.  The problem is that the chimes are keeping me awake at night!  I'm wondering if there is any way to tell if it's possible to silence the chimes at night?

Answer
Hi David,
Some clocks do not have a chime shut-off. On others, there are several types of shut-offs.
The most common is a chime/silent lever protruding through the dial at the the 3:00, 9:00 or 12:00 position.
On other clocks there are two strings with rings on the ends hanging down from behind the dial. You pull these strings down and hook them onto a hook mounted on the inside sides of the clock to shut off the chime and strike.
On a few clocks, you have to access a chime shut off from inside the case, either by removing a back panel or side panels. On these clocks, you will see an L-shaped lever which can be rotated to lift the chime hammers away from the  chime rods.
