Clocks, Watches/clock chimes

Question
I have a 50's vintage Verichron wall clock which used to have wonderful Westminster chimes at the hour and quarter hours. Suddenly, the chimes stopped sounding. The clock still keeps good time. Did I overwind it somehow, do you think?

Answer
Overwinding is nearly impossible.  The conditions attributed to this phenomenon are really symptomatic of other conditions.  Without the benefit of additional information, the first suspect would be that the clock needs cleaning and adjustment.  If your clock has gone more than 5 years without inspection, I would suggest you do so now, before damage occurs.  Regards WJP
