About John Newman
Expertise
Because of the variations of clock values throughout the world, and particularly the lack of data on modern production clocks, I regret that I CANNOT DETERMINE CLOCK VALUES. ALSO, WATCHES ARE NOT MY FIELD. However, I can advise the clock owner on proper maintenance of a clock to keep it running, small corrections and adjustments and how to move a clock without damaging it. I can also advise on obtaining parts for clocks. It helps if you can send any information on the clock movement which is usually found on the back plate of the movement. I have been involved in building, repairing and restoring clocks for about 30 years and was plant engineer in the mid 90's and later operations and engineering consultant at Emperor Clock Company in Fairhope, Alabama. I now have my own clock shop.

Experience
One of my greatest accomplishments was traveling to China to assist a clock factory in building clocks to the standards which we required. With the proper specifications and quality control, some beautiful clock cases were built. The factory people from the wood carvers to the plant manager were very congenial, friendly and I left a lot of wonderful friends when I returned from my trips.

What? Hermle is right up there with Keininger and Urgos in this league of clockworks... "a limited number of clocks"? Surely you jest! This is like saying "I've only ever worked on one Seth Thomas, guess they did not make many!"

Photographer801, I was browsing some past information and just happened to run across your 11-30-2007 comment on my "jesting" on Hermle making a limited number of clocks. I sent out an inquiry to my Internet Clocksmiths group of 800 members and only received one reply. Before you post an answer such as you did, would you please read and understand to what you are referring. I was referring to W. Haid who made a limited number of clocks using the Hermle movements (Hermle is the largest manufacturer of clock movements), and just for the record, ALL manufacturers have had some runs or designs of movements that did not live up to expectations. Just to keep the record straight.

I also purchased a W. Haid clock at a thrift store just yesterday and was trying to find information on it. It is in excellent condition. It is also the "school house" design and says it is made in W. Germany.
I paid 14.99 and think it was a steal. Just wanted to let you know there is at least one more out there. Thank you. -Shannon
