Question
I was wondering what it means when on the clock it says a number then jewel. Can you tell me what that means..

Answer
Hi Neal,
"Jewels" are jeweled bearings. On a clock, these are usually the bearings for the upper end of the gear train, specifically the bearings for the verge and/or escape wheel. If you look into the back of the clock, you will see them on the upper back main plate of the movement. They look like small red (occasionally clear) glass circles.
These jewels are synthetic sapphire disks with precise holes drilled through them. The pivots (ends of the gear shafts) turn in these holes. Their purpose is to provide a bearing surface which is very hard and smooth, wears less, and provides less friction than simple clock bearings, which are merely holes in the brass main plates.
