Question
why would lots of feathers be appearing at the bottom of cage

Answer
Kit,

There are a few possibilities.  First, your cockatiel could be molting.  Another possibility is that your bird could be having night frights and losing feathers while flapping.  The last possible cause is that your cockatiel could be plucking itself.

If you don't hear it having flapping fits at night, and you don't see it overpreening and plucking, then chances are it is molting.
