Cockatiels/hand taming

Question
Three days ago I went to my local pet store and bought a cockatiel. I had one when I was a child and it was the greatest pet ever!!! Mine as a child was hand tame to begin with. The one from the pet store is not. I have no idea how to train it. The man from the pet store says I should grab the bird, hold it covering it's head until it calms down and then pet it. I have looked    online and people say defiantly do not do that. I have been slowly sticking my hand in the cage and my bird flipps out. I just ignore him and stay with my hand in the cage for a little while. That does not seem to be helping,it seems to make him more uneasy. He just looks so unhappy I am not sure what to do. Also some people have been saying no toys when you first bring him home because it could scare him, is this true????

Answer
well i never herd that before about the toys. as for the training gabing the bird in that manner at the pet store is 100% ok but for the training allow the bird to accept you and he will as soon as he trust you. i does not take i day for the bird to jupm on your hand throug the cage its and ungoing process sometimes it long but just be patient he will be tamed.
