Question
Hello, I have a 15 year old male cockatiel. and I was wondering if I would still have the oppertunity to train him at this age. If so what things can I do to make him like me? Thanks!

Answer

Hello Dylan -

Thank you for your question.

I understand what you mean, but I'm sure he likes you.  My male cockatiel, Squeaky, was 8 weeks old when I got him and he had several years to get very attached to just me.  He is "suspicious" around others until there have been repeated encounters.

It is harder to teach them to sing/talk when they're older but you can teach them to take food from your hand or sit on your shoulder, etc.  Repeat a particular whistle over and over every day, or every time you come into the room offer him food (spray millet, a few seeds) from your hand.  If he sits on your hand, stand in front of a large mirror so he can see you and himself.  Leave the cage door open when your in the room and let him sit on top of the cage where he can watch you.  Once you start doing this, he may squeal when you leave his sight--a sign that he is becoming attached.

Whatever you do, repetition is key.  That means everyday, more than once a day for several weeks or months.

Good luck to you.

Regards,

Teresa
