Question
Hi. My wife and i are planning to get a black and white
cocker spaniel puppy. we have 3 rex cats, all below 4 years
of age. will this upset the apple cart? are cp's easy to
raise? what are the pitfalls? regards, mark.

Answer
I wouldn't worry about the cats since most dogs learn quickly that "cats rule" :)  And, of course, initially the puppy will either be confined somewhat or supervised.  Adult animals are normally fairly tolerant of babies but be prepared for a cat to put a dog in his place.  Our own cat just thumps the dogs on the head (no use of claws) if they tick her off.

Cockers are no harder or easier to handle than any other breed.
They are, however, high maintenance.  Daily brushing, professional groom once a month, a good hour's walk daily (when a bit older),
ear cleaning, etc.

I'm deeply hoping you're not buying from a pet store?  And there are a lot of questions you should be asking a reputable breeder.
Also a premium food is essential.  I suggest Innova.

Also know that although cockers are cuddly and cute and very social dogs - they're also quite dominant.  Not a problem if you handle the first display properly.

I hope this helps, Mark.  Do write with any further questions.

I'd also add they don't do well left alone all day (but most dogs don't) and especially a puppy who needs feeding 5x a day - training - housebreaking, etc.  They're very sociable dogs basically and can get a little weird if too isolated.

Health, nutrition, training. Please note: I used to highly recommend Innova products but, unfortunately, as with Canidae, they have sold out to Proctor & Gamble. This guarantees lower quality to a dangerous point so I will no longer be advising anyone to buy it.

20 years of owning this breed.
