Question
Hello
I will be getting a 7 month male cocker spaniel and I heard differant stories on what not to feed them.
anything with a wheat product is not to be fed to them it will do something to there eyes.
would you please send me an e-mail on what kind of food and treat they can have.. I know they need a good diet so I am trying to make sure I will be getting the right food.
please reply soon. we will be picking him up this weekend.
thank you
yours truly

Answer
How great that you know a good diet is essential.

Where are you getting the dog from?  Get some of the food they've been feeding because you don't want to change his food abruptly.
He's going to be unsettled for a few days and needs to get used to you and his new environment.

When you get him home, take him in and out very often to go to the bathroom and praise & reward when he goes.  Expect a few accidents.
Just clean it up without comment.  Take him for lots of walks

Now food...feed him whatever he's used to for a few days and then start adding a bit more of the new food every day.

My favorite food for cockers is Canidae (canned) All Life Stages.
Go to Canidae.com to locate a store near you.  Any store that carries Canidae will carry other premium brands.  Whatever you choose - use different formulas and rotate.  Different protein sources are good.
Use canned - give little or no kibble.

Other good foods:
AvoDerm (PetSmart now carries this)
Innova EVO (Naturapet.com to find a store)
Eagle Pack Holistic
California Natural
Chicken Soup
Lick Your Chops
Merrick ** (very good)
Solid Gold (also make excellent treats)
Newman's Organics
Azmira
Fromm
Spot's Stew (I believe PetCo carries this)

***TREATS *** Zukes or Solid Gold or Mother Hubbard's.

Best of luck with your new boy and remember - it takes a couple of weeks for you to get to know each other.  If I can be of help you can write me directly at DeeBeck7765@aol.com.
