Cocker Spaniels/feeding a cocker spaniel

Question
We adopted a senior cocker spaniel.  He weighs 20 lbs.  The foster family fed him 1 cup of dry food once a day. The dog food bag says 2 1/2 cups a day.  Do I feed him that much?  Do I feed him twice a day?

Answer
It sounds as if this boy could use some first class nutrition.  It also sounds like he's underweight.

I don't know what you're using but I strongly advise getting him on a premium food like Canidae - AvoDerm - Innova - Merrick.

If you go to Canidae.com you can find a dealer near you.  Any store that carries Canidae will carry other premium brands.  PetSmart now carries AvoDerm.

I'd also advise a full Wellness check up by your vet.  That means an exam - bloodwork (ask to include a thyroid panel in that) and getting him on any flea or heartworm protection he needs. (Revolution does all that plus mites).  He'll need a heartworm test also.

I'd also advise using canned food instead of kibble (or very little kibble) because it's more digestible - higher protein - less processed.  Switch him over slowly and yes, you should be feeding 2x daily.  For seniors 3x is even better.

How wonderful of you to adopt an older dog!  Please do write with any and all questions about cockers.

Expertise

Health, nutrition, training. Please note: I used to highly recommend Innova products but, unfortunately, as with Canidae, they have sold out to Proctor & Gamble. This guarantees lower quality to a dangerous point so I will no longer be advising anyone to buy it.

20 years of owning this breed.
