Question
Hi... I have a one year old female cocker spaniel i got her when she was about 5 months and the person that had her before me did not house train her at all. I take her out and she wont go to the bathroom and as soon as I bring her in she will go right in front of me. I have put puppy training pad down for her at night as well and she wont use them and its gotten to the point where the carpets really stink and no matter what I do I can't get the smell out. thank you

Answer
You have to take her out - choose a command - and watch her.
When she's about to go - give the command - then lavish praise & treat.  She has to know WHY she's out there :)

Also - get her on a schedule and walk her after every nap and every meal...anticipate and command - praise & treat.  Initially go for a walk - not the backyard and stay out till she goes.

Odd you should write with this problem since I just got a 3 year old rescue who hadn't been housebroken.  Within a week it was done.
I took him out every two hours on leash.

At night I'd advise crating until this is solved.  I'd also advise taking a urine sample in to the vet to make darned sure she doesn't have a urinary tract infection - so common and makes housebreaking impossible.

If you get on this and make it a top priority things will get better quickly.

As for the carpets - I just bought a Bissell QuickSteamer and it's amazing.  In your case I'd use some of that Nature's Plus (or is it Nature's Way?) - PetSmart - it has enzymes in it that will eliminate the odor.

Good luck - and remember that this isn't her fault.  You'll be surprised how quickly she catches on that when she goes outside there's happy praise and treats.  And do get her urine tested. That could be the main problem.
Do write again with any other questions.
