Question
We found a Cocker Spaniel in our yard a few days ago and nobody has come to claim him so one of my friends wants him but we don't know what he eats, if he has had shots, when was the last time he was washed and what kind of toys and shampoos to use on the dog. please help us.

Answer
First I'd ask any local vet to check him for a microchip.
They should be happy to do this for you.

Since we don't know what he's used to I'd pick a good premium food like Canidae - AvoDerm - Innova EVO and start with the kibble.
Then add just a bit of canned once you see everything is going well.

Any mild dog shampoo will do.  Hopefully you have a hand-held shower attachment because rinsing well is very, very important.  Put some cotton balls in his ears - don't want water down there.

I wouldn't rush to get him vaccinated because for sure he has been and they only need vacs every 3 years.  If your friend decides to take him I'd get a heartworm test done (quick and easy) and get him on heartworm protection.  Revolution takes care of fleas and heartworm.

Just be sure she understands the responsibilities of having a cocker.
They're high maintenance - daily brushing - monthly grooming - an hour's walk (minimum) daily.  They do not do well left on their own every day all day !

If you have any other questions at all - please do write again and bless your heart for helping this little guy out.

Expertise

Health, nutrition, training. Please note: I used to highly recommend Innova products but, unfortunately, as with Canidae, they have sold out to Proctor & Gamble. This guarantees lower quality to a dangerous point so I will no longer be advising anyone to buy it.

Experience

20 years of owning this breed.
