Cocker Spaniels - Cocker Spaniel Heat

Expert: Delores Beck - 11/3/2009

Question
I have a one year old red and white partie cocker.  She's just beautiful.  Anyway, I was told it best to let her go through one heat cycle prior to her being spayed.  We still haven't any indication that she's had a cycle.  She's been to visit the vet for all boosters and check ups, nothing to worry about so we're told but is it possible for her to have been in heat and we were unaware or maybe she hasn't had a heat cycle yet??

Answer
I very much doubt she hasn't had a cycle.  As long as you're planning on spaying her relatively soon, there's no huge rush.

But..don't leave her outside alone :).  Male dogs will come from miles around and can get over fences.

If you do some research (just type in search terms "Signs a female dog is in heat") you may find some signals that you missed.
