Cocker Spaniels - Grooming question

Expert: Delores Beck - 6/23/2009

Question
Hello- I took my cocker to the groomer on sat and she had to shave her all the way down and now she has red spots under her tail and in the area where she pees. What do I do? Do I need to take her to the vet? It seems to be very tender and she keeps licking

Answer
It's probably just irritated from too-hot clippers.

What I'd use is some aloe vera gel (not juice) BUT not something with aloe in it - pure aloe gel.  Any health food store should have it and it doesn't matter if she licks it.  I use Desert Lily.

The other thing is an oatmeal soak.  Aveeno makes it and most drugstores/supermarkets have it.  Comes in a box with packets of 100% pure colloidal oatmeal.  Fill bathtub and mix in one packet.
Sit her in it for 10 minutes.

You can also try a wet compress of 1/2 water and 1/2 white vinegar.
The aloe gel is your best bet though.
