QuestionHi Papa Jack; Years ago I bought this coin at an auction and paid $4500 for it. Now I see that gold prices are up and I wonder what I could sell it for now. It is graded, 65 and has never been out of it's case since I"ve had it. I'm 75 and if I die I don't want to have my executor give it away for nothing. So I'm thinking about selling. I don't want to send it through the mail, for examinaion but I don't think there is any way to sell it locally. What's your advice?
AnswerHello Rick,
Has it been professionally graded? Top values will be paid for a coin graded by PCGS or NGC. Sometimes thousands more than raw coins. It is worth sending unique coins for certification by these company’s.
If this coin is authentic and grade 65 it sells for more than $40,000 to $55,000 dollars now. The price of gold does not drive the price of a numismatic item such as yours, it is the demand by collectors.
Depending on your location there are dealers that will broker a sale for you. There are also auction houses that will take your coin on consignment and some will come to meet you to pick up a valuable collection.
If you write back with the general location (nearest large cities) and telephone area code or codes and some zip codes in your area, I can direct you to an AMERICAN NUMISMATIC ASSOCIATION MEMBER/DEALER near there. They are ethical and trustworthy.
I hope this information helps. Please remember to rate this answer. And check the nomination box on the rating page below any comments you may have.
Good Luck
