Coin and Paper Money Collecting/A 1917 Mercury Dime

Question
Saw a post you made about an earlier question about the 1917 dime.  I was interested on how to tell if it is a P, S, or D.  I found a 1917 dime today and it's not mint, worn on the edges and the Mercury is a little worn .  But where on the coin would you find it.  I see something that looks like a W to the right of the neck of the mercury.

Answer
Hi Ayn,

Sorry for the delay -- I was out of town.

The W you see on the front of the coin is actually a "A over W" monogram of the designer's initials -- Adolph Weinman.

The mintmark would be located on the reverse, at about 7 o'clock, next to the rim.  It will either be a "D", or an "S", or there will be nothing there (back then Philadelphia mint coins had no mintmark).

I hope this helps,

Expertise

My strong familiarity with all U.S. Mint coins, extensive reference library, and close relationships with many other dealers allows me to identify just about any coin made in the USA. I receive regular updates to all the current price guides -- both wholesale & retail -- to provide accurate values. So, with a good description or pictures, I should be able to identify and value any U.S. coin you have.

Experience

I've been a coin dealer since the 1980's and a coin collector since the 1960's. I specialize in U.S. Silver Coins and have an active online website -- The Working Man's Rare Coins -- http://www.workingmancoins.com -- offering information and inventory in U.S. coins.
