Question
i recently purchased 5000 wheaties on ebay. by the looks of them they were truly unsearched some pennies were red on one side and brown on the other as if they were sitting, lots of s mints and older coins, a 1909 red unwashed but the one that threw me was a 1922 p in what i would grade xf. it looks real to me. my question is how can i tell a fake and how much is a realistic value of this coin?  thanks keith

Answer
Keith,

There are 3 different die types and thousands of fakes out there, so you really need an expert to look at your coin first hand to determin if it is genuine.

If you have the Die #3 variety, and if it is in XF condition, the coin will be worth well over $2,000 !!!

I would suggest you visit the PCGS and NGC websites, find a local authorized dealer, and have them submit the coin for you :

http://www.ngccoin.com

You may also try checking out a local coin show, where you can take the coin to be examined first hand :

I hope this helps,

Dan

Expertise

My strong familiarity with all U.S. Mint coins, extensive reference library, and close relationships with many other dealers allows me to identify just about any coin made in the USA. I receive regular updates to all the current price guides -- both wholesale & retail -- to provide accurate values. So, with a good description or pictures, I should be able to identify and value any U.S. coin you have.

Experience

I've been a coin dealer since the 1980's and a coin collector since the 1960's. I specialize in U.S. Silver Coins and have an active online website -- The Working Man's Rare Coins -- http://www.workingmancoins.com -- offering information and inventory in U.S. coins.
