Coin and Paper Money Collecting/1941 nickel

Question
I have a 1941 nickel that is dark brown in color, not unlike the color of a dirty penny. There is no mint mark. Is the color due to it being made of a different metal because of the war? If it is just discolored, how do you suggest I clean it?

Answer
Jim,

The silver war nickels did not start until 1942, and all of them would have a large P, D, or S above the building on the back.

My bet is that your coin is just discolored from being exposed to dirt or chemicals or heat.  It is common enough that it has essentially no collector value.  And since nickel is such a very hard metal to clean, I wouldn't bother spending time trying.  You can spend it.

Expertise

My strong familiarity with all U.S. Mint coins, extensive reference library, and close relationships with many other dealers allows me to identify just about any coin made in the USA. I receive regular updates to all the current price guides -- both wholesale & retail -- to provide accurate values. So, with a good description or pictures, I should be able to identify and value any U.S. coin you have.

Experience

I've been a coin dealer since the 1980's and a coin collector since the 1960's. I specialize in U.S. Silver Coins and have an active online website -- The Working Man's Rare Coins -- http://www.workingmancoins.com -- offering information and inventory in U.S. coins.
