Question
I have a 1941 nickel with no mint mark on it. I looked at some guides and there were only 1941 coins listed that had a mint mark, is mine something rare since there isn't a mark? even so, what would it be worth? It is worn quite a bit, the words are all still readable though.

Answer
Hi Rob,

It is normal for there to be no mintmark on your nickel -- it means that the coin was made at the main mint in Philadelphia.  "P" mintmarks did not begin to be added to any coins until the late 1970's (other than the large "P" mintmarks on the back of Philadelphia minted silver nickels from 1942 to 1945).

I don't know what guides you were looking at, but if they showed a P in the listings, it is only implied for the Philadelphia minted coins before the late 1970's -- there were no actual "P" mintmarks on the coins.

In well-worn condition, your 1941 nickel has no added collector value.

Expertise

My strong familiarity with all U.S. Mint coins, extensive reference library, and close relationships with many other dealers allows me to identify just about any coin made in the USA. I receive regular updates to all the current price guides -- both wholesale & retail -- to provide accurate values. So, with a good description or pictures, I should be able to identify and value any U.S. coin you have.

Experience

I've been a coin dealer since the 1980's and a coin collector since the 1960's. I specialize in U.S. Silver Coins and have an active online website -- The Working Man's Rare Coins -- http://www.workingmancoins.com -- offering information and inventory in U.S. coins.
