Coin and Paper Money Collecting/1943 Wheat Penny

Question
I found a 1943 S Wheat penny that appears to be silver.
I also found 1939 S and 1944 S Regular Wheat pennies.  My students are fundraising for a trip to DC this summer, so if they are worth even more than a penny, that would be awesome.
Thanks,

Answer
Hi Kay,

The 1943-S penny is actually made out of steel.  The US Mint switched to the steel composition for one year to help with the war effort.  They made millions of them and are worth anywhere from 20 cents to a few dollars.  The other wheat cents are worth about 5 cents in circulated conditions
