Question
Hi Papa.
This 1951 d cent is rather unusual. It seems very thin and is the size of a dime. I had it weighed and it is 2.888 grams.  Could this be a wrong planchet? Thank you in advance for any help you can give me.

Answer
Hello Mike,

If it is not a silver metal it was not made on a US Dime blank which is known to happen.
If it is copper it may be made on a foreign coin blank. The US Mint did produce contract to make coins for other nations I do not think the Denver mint made any though.
Your coin would need to be looked at by a professional dealer.
Try to find a coin show there are authenticators willing to give their opinion at the tables for free. If you can’t find a coin show or dealer I may be able to help. If you can give me the nearest large Cities and some postal zip codes, I will refer you to an expert in your area.
