Question
Hi; I read your answer to Valerie concerning the 1955 s penny being very common. But, then I read on the internet that "a 1955 penny has a "double-die date" and can be worth upwards to $27,000 to as low as $500-ish. What's the scoop on the double-die date 1955 penny? Bill

Answer
Hello Bill,

The error coin market is not my field.
But these rare coins can, and do, sell for whatever someone is willing to pay at auction.
There is no record of how many 1955 cents were made with this die. Since all cent collectors want one for their collection prices stay high.
The sale price also is according to grade. The grading scale goes from 1 to 70. The list price for a grade 40 is about $1,400 dollars but in grade 65 is $37,500 dollars.
So the coins have to be examined one at a time to get a market value. I hope this information helps.
