Coin and Paper Money Collecting/1960 Quarter -no mint strike
Expert: PAPAJACK - 10/30/2007
QuestionI have a 1960 quarter with no mint strike. I believe these are mostly silver. What is the value of such coins as these?
AnswerHello Kathleen,
The U.S. coins Dollar, Half Dollar, Quarter and Dime made 1964 and before are 90% silver coins. They are currently selling at 9 times the face value even in low grades just for the silver content alone.
And Kennedy half dollars from 1965 to 1970 are 40% silver, after 1970 they are nickel clad like the modern coins produced today in the USA.
Coins are valued on a scale from 1 to 70. And on how rare a coin is. With no or little experience it is sometimes easier letting another collector look at them, and even most coin shops will help for free.
But with circulated coins after 1955 the price is kind of low. There are just so many available in uncirculated grades. So you need to grade a coin to set an actual value. Mint mark, state of preservation and any problems (dents, scratch, having ever been cleaned etc.) decide the price.
The 1960 and 1964 quarters sell from $2.50 to $3.00 to collectors in circulated grades. More if they are in a collectable Grade.
Feel free to write me again with any more questions on the U.S. coins.
