QuestionHi Papa,I am a fellow expert in home repair etc.on YAHOO. I have a nickle which is double stamped on the face, can you tell me the value? Thanks Brian M.Flickinger
AnswerHello Brian,
I have no recorded error priced in my catalogs of a lamination error on your coin.
One price guide shows a Jefferson Nickel lamination error valued at $4 dollars. It is described as about 25% of the coin surface peeled off.
A multiple struck nickel will sell for as much as $10 depending on how the strike is. How clear is the secondary image on the coin? Is it off center? Is the rest of the design very strong and detailed? All this comes into the value.
As information for any types of error coin "the Greater the error the Greater The Value" is the general rule, and it does have to be a Mint Error.
I also want to mention COMBINED ORGANIZATION of NUMISMATIC ERROR COLLECTORS ASSOCIATION, they are the ultimate experts in the error coin field.
CONECA is a national numismatic organization devoted to the education of error and variety coin collectors. CONECA focuses on many error and variety specialties, including doubled dies, Repunched mint marks, multiple errors, clips, double strikes, off-metals and off-centers just to name a few.
For more information on errors look for the "The ERROR COIN ENCYCLOPEDIA" by Arnold Margolis
It goes into detail about how errors have occurred at the mint. Your Library may have a copy or it is inexpensive to buy.
