Coin and Paper Money Collecting/1971 D Quarter Flawed

Question
I have 1971 d quarter that is thinner than a regular quarter. What makes it odd is that there is a seam going around the entire edge of the quarter. You can feel it with your fingernail. The eagles head which should line up with the bottom of George Washingtons neck is off from being center. If these were actually 2 quarters stuck together they would each be the thickness of a thin dime. Have you heard of heard of these quarters before? Who and where could I send this to to have it authenticated?

Answer
Hi Terry,

My bet is that your coin has been altered -- kinda like the old way they used to make two-headed coins, but for some reason they tried to make it look like a rotated die error.

You could try to send it to ANACS to be authenticated.  Check out their website for details on how to submit your coin :

Good luck!

Expertise

My strong familiarity with all U.S. Mint coins, extensive reference library, and close relationships with many other dealers allows me to identify just about any coin made in the USA. I receive regular updates to all the current price guides -- both wholesale & retail -- to provide accurate values. So, with a good description or pictures, I should be able to identify and value any U.S. coin you have.

Experience

I've been a coin dealer since the 1980's and a coin collector since the 1960's. I specialize in U.S. Silver Coins and have an active online website -- The Working Man's Rare Coins -- http://www.workingmancoins.com -- offering information and inventory in U.S. coins.
