Question
Hi Joe,
I recently received a 1776-1976D US half dollar. On the left of Independence Hall there is a Masonic Emblem engraved. Could you tell me why this would have been done and does this increase the coin in value? I also receive a 1914D US wheat penny. It's very worn but the date is very legible. What would the value of the penny be in a very worn condition.
Thanks for you help.
Tony

Answer
The Half Dollar was counterstamped after it left the US Mint probably as a promotional piece as a fund raiser of some sort.  It has no extra value as such.
As for the 1914_D cent. I buy them on a regular basis, as long as they are not damaged or cleaned for anywhere from $40 and up.
