Coin and Paper Money Collecting/1978 penny with a smooth back

Question
Joe,  I found a 1978 penny that has Lincoln on the front and a smooth back.  It does not appear the back was ever struck by a die.  Is this something with much value or should I just toss into my box full of wheat pennies?

I look forward to your answer,
Ed

Answer
Hi Ed,
I would not toss it yet.  When a coin is struck, the fron (obverse) and back (reverse) dies strike the coin simultaneously.  I doubt theta it was produced that way but it is possible.  What about the thickness?  Is it the same as a regular cent?
Let me know and I will see what I can research for you.  OmegaPM@aol.com
