Question
Hello Mr. Hayes,

I have a 1997 Commemorative PROOF coin set with the $5.00 Gold Coin, Card, Pin and patch in wooden case.  I do see this coin in the graded state at a much higher price.  Am I smart ot seperate the coin and have it graded? If so, do I try to sell it with the other items in the set or seperately? The coin has never been out of the plastic case and looks fabulous.  Thanks in advance for your help.

Answer
Hi Dub,
I am all for keeping coins in their original holders.  Any coin can be certified at any time.  Certainly if you are considering selling the coins, it is something to think about.  The Proof Gold coin is not nearly as rare as the Mint State one.
If I were selling the proof set, I would sell it in the original pkg., all intact with the pin patch, etc.
